Keith, Sandman and I turned out for the
race. Another bout of morning madness. I think.Keith
entered the junior vets cat while Sandman was really mad and joined me in the Sports Cat
(allez Sandman!!!).9 laps around the course. They was a slight slope on each lap with
points for the first four riders across the line each lap. So this was a race with primes.
I was feeling my oats that day and I was interested in
attacking and breaking away so I never contested the sprints. The other guys, however,
were quite amazing. Even when the points had been mopped up, the rest of the field would
still sprint! I ended up being at the back a few times amazed at all the energy being put
into little use.
Geylang was there in force and they controlled the race
perfectly. A few would attack and the others would sit on you as you chase. They simply
refuse to work, even when you have broken away with them. I sat near the front for the
first 4 laps and whenever one of them attacked I would cover but the moment they saw me
with them they would situp even when a break had occured. Meanies.
After the 4th lap, round the corner two of them broke
away. I was still stuck behind the others (who I think were beginning to tire after they
hammered up the slope). When I saw that happen, I started to chase. Bloody hell, they were
about 200m in front already, making good use of the downhill and working nicely. I chased
and hoped someone would join me. Of course someone did. A highly "cooperative"
Geylang rider joined me and declined to work. He apologized for not working and pointed to
his mates in front but what for? I mean in his place I would have done the same thing.
The others were still recuperating so now the group of
10/12 riders was in 3 groups. 2 Geylang in front, me and Geylang in no-man's-land and the
rest. Working alone, the chances were very poor that I would ever catch up with the two
but that was with 5 more laps. I was thinking if I could at least catch up, I might come
in fourth at least.
So good, but I think I lost my mind for a while because I
went all out on the slope trying to bridge. And then the Geylang wheelsucker attacked to
join his mates in front and I finally realised that even if i caught them they were going
to attack me into little pieces. I needed help, big time. So after the slope, I sat up and
waited for the rest to come up. One Thomson guy started to organize the chase, and I was
feeling confident again. With 4 guys, we could DO something (there was Thomson,
Sandman, someguy and me). But luck refused to smile on me. After one lap of chasing, my
right pedal broke.I was left cycling with my left foot. I could push with my right but it
was square pedalling - i could not pull, I could not scrape, I could not stand and
accelerate. That was it. Race over and I was really upset with ShimaNO!. The bolt holding
the tensioning spring had broken and could not hold the shoe cleat in place.
Sandman was nice enough to wait for me and we finished
6th and 7th I think - don't really know as the results are not officially out yet. I don't
know about the points though. I did not pay attention to that.
We stayed to watch the men's open and it was spectacular
stuff with some wry humor. Wee Liak and John Ong managed to lap the pack - only Nick
escaped being lapped. Maybe that would shut up all their detractors on the SACA Forum. It
was funny because there were two stragglers who were caught by Wee Liak and John and by
the rules they could get points in the sprint - and they did! The peloton never caught the
stragglers and was sprinting for 3rd and 4th, not knowing that those points had already
been taken! The race was fun even - no major accidents (some guy in the Open ran into a
car that had stopped, cursed the driver and went on! heard that the car was badly dented
though). It was quite interesting to just watch how the other riders rode the race. Well,
maybe next time, we can have a larger TA outing and prevent Geylang from making it look so
easy.
