Lithium
got her name from the Energizer Battery of the same name. She is one of
the ultra long distance riders of the group, having taken part in the Ride
for Life hence her nickname (you know, never say die
and all that). She
currently works as a laboratory
biologist but she won’t tell us what her most likely line of work would
be if she wasn’t doing this. “I know what I what, but it’s
private” she insists.
One
of the more faithful to her bikes, she’s only had two. A Voodoo Bokor
(mountain bike, although it never saw the trails and is looking for a new
home) and her current ride a Colnago C40. She’s been riding for almost
10 years, although not continuously. She considers Energizer the most
influential riding person, after herself, of course. The best advice
she’s been given about riding is to spin, cos she don’t have the
muscle to mash and since she’s weak on up hills to continue spinning on
the downhill to catch up with the rest, rather than coasting. And although
she’s been riding for a decade, she claims that she has never given
advice to anyone but would pass on the same words to wisdom shared with
her.
Her
best cycling moments were when the reached to top of a 3000 plus foot high
mountain on the second day of the RFL ride and to look down on how far
she’d come. She also felt “in the zone” during the same RFL ride
when she managed to keep up with a fast pack along a forest road, much
like the one in the Lance Armstrong Nike
commercial. (haven’t seen it,
go here) It was just about to rain and the group had been pulling at 35-40
kph for an hour prior.
She
prefers not to think about her worst cycling moments as she’d rather
save her precious few brain cells for her best moments BUT she does
remember a crash coming back from a ride to Desaru. It was raining by the
time they got back to Singapore and she narrowly avoided hitting Energizer
at a stop light at Bedok. But got hit by Sting instead. The rain and being
tired made it even worse
Her
best bike related purchase was SPDRs. “Fastest performance increase for
S$300, best bang for the buck.”
Her
worst bike related purchase was when she replaced the chain rings and cogs
on her Voodoo, just a couple of months before she got her C40. The Bokor
has not seen the road since (did I mention that it was for sale?) Her best
non-bike related purchase was buying her own flat. “It represents
freedom
and independence.
In true fashion, she can’t remember any bad non-bike related purchases.
