The Prelude

HOW WE BECAME A LAST MINUTE TEAM

It all started with an innocent e-mail out to the usual suspects on a Friday afternoon about our 'weekly' Sunday morning ride. And the usual suspects includes Ling, Rina, Olaf and Chi, whom I usually ride with. And nearly all of them reply with a positive for an easy Sun morning ride. And the next thing we know, Ling reminded Chi that he's supposed to be participating in the "King Of The Jungle" race on Sun morning and Chi apologised for 'forgetting' that he's taking part in a race (is that possible???)

Anyway, our interest was aroused and we started probing Chi for more information about the race and he so kindly forwarded us all the related info about the race. And initially, when I realised that registration was closed, I was toying with the idea of just biking along with Chi's group just for some laughs and see what the whole race is about.

And the next thing we know, both Rina & Olaf are keen to join if we can form a team and if we can get Togoparts to let us take part at the last minute. A quick phone call to Ling to get her to contact the organiser and after an hour of deliberation or so and YES, WE'RE IN!!

And since Olaf is so desperate about having us 3 beautiful ladies make his day by racing with him, we decided to call ourselves Olaf's Angels (which certainly maybe made not just his day but his whole life!) and also, I can't come up with a better name since it was such a last minute decision.

ON CLOUD 9

I was in KL for work when I got the usual email from Rebecca asking Rina, Ling, Chi and myself out for a casual ride on Sunday morning. I hesitated to confirm as it collided with my Sunday road ride and decided to wait to see what happens. The inevitable flood of emails followed and after about 20 it became interesting. Chi couldn’t make it because of a race around Bukit Timah and the girls decided to take part as well, offering to me to be their final team mate.

That was the moment I jumped onto the keyboard to fire off an email to let them know I’m in. I mean – it just doesn’t get any better being the only guy on a team with these three girls, so I was on cloud nine.

Just good my girls are well connected in the local biking scene, so Ling managed to get us signed up way beyond cut off time and we were in business. When I got to know that Rebecca named our team “Olaf’s Angels” I knew that all my lucky stars must have been aligned dead center that day.

Only drawback was that I was supposed to be the “slave of the day”, which translated into fulfilling duties like carrying anything heavy, keeping quiet in general and behaving nicely. Knowing that the last two requirements are not my strong points Rebecca already warned me not to make her regret that I’m on the team.

Girls have this uncanny ability for sensing trouble…
